On February 20, down 2-0 against the Americans with under four minutes to play, it looked as if the Canadian womens hockey teams dream of capturing their fourth straight Olympic gold medal had faded away. Team Canadas experience though allowed them to overcome the late 2-0 deficit and make history beating the Americans 3-2 in overtime. However, the comeback that happened in less than 15 minutes of playing time took years of experience and preparation. On the bench was Jayna Hefford. A member of every Canadian Olympic team since 1998, Hefford used all of that experience for the tense third period and overtime. "With six, seven minutes left in the third, I thought its not looking good, but that thought only lasted five seconds. Once we got that first one, I knew wed be fine." Hefford and Team Canada faced a big hurdle weeks before the historic gold medal game. Dan Church, their coach since 2012, unexpectedly resigned two months before the Olympics were to begin. Also, many veterans that were expected to carry a lot of the teams responsibilities were surprisingly not selected. "With Dan, we tried to ask some questions to get some answers, but we really didnt find anything. It got to the point where we realized the decision was out of our hands." Under new coach Kevin Dineen, the team spent ten days in Austria to regroup before they headed to Sochi. It was a time for rest and recuperation before the competition since every member of the team was exhausted both physically and mentally. Despite the challenges, the Canadians put together a string of wins that led them to the gold medal game. And the team didnt need any extra motivation when they saw who was at the other end of the ice. "There is no one youd rather beat then the Americans. Theyre the best team outside of us. Thats the team you want to play in any final," says Hefford. Although the Canadians were down a pair of goals, that first tally gave them a lifeline. The second goal tied the game, creating emotions for even the veteran players that thought they had seen it all. "When (Marie-Philip) Poulin got the tying goal, thats the most excited Ive ever been for any moment of a game in any moment of my career," Hefford says. "But in the third period and overtime, you try to contain your emotions a little bit." The team could let their emotions lose eight minutes into overtime when Poulin, who was the hero in Vancouver in 2010, scored again to give Canada yet another gold. "It still feels very surreal how that game dramatically turned. Its such a great feeling and its still hard to believe," says Hefford. Theres very little Hefford has not accomplished in her career but after a fourth gold medal, it would be tempting to go for a fifth in 2018. "After Vancouver I didnt know if I was going to keep playing. I felt really good and I thought I had four more years. But now its time for me to look at my options. Going out after a game like that would be perfect." There is nothing more perfect than going out on top of the hockey world. New York City FC introduced Frank Lampard in Brooklyn on Thursday after signing the 36-year-old former Chelsea midfielder to a two-year contract. The Montreal Canadiens winning mentality has managed to persist despite their first loss in nearly three weeks. Perhaps the memories of a familiar victory can put the Canadiens back in the win column Saturday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Listen to the game live on TSN Radio 690 in Montreal. Pregame coverage starts at 5pm et. Montreal (26-12-2) downed Pittsburgh 4-1 on the road last Saturday behind a 30-save effort from Carey Price for the Canadiens sixth win in a row and ninth in 10 games. That run came to an end Tuesday, as Montreal allowed four second-period goals and was outshot 36-22 as it returned from a five-game trip with a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay. Prior to that defeat, Montreal had found a groove on both ends of the ice. Price had won eight of nine starts over that 10-game stretch, the Canadiens allowed only 1.44 goals per game and supported Price with 3.3 goals per game of their own - a significant improvement over their 2.41 average through the seasons first 29 games. To coach Michel Therrien, those improvements were not undone by a single loss. Attitude is a very important thing for me, Therrien told the Canadiens official website. Theyre ready to work hard and theyve got a good attitude. I dont think that this group gets enough credit for their work ethic. I know it. Im with the guys every day. Theres a good atmosphere at the heart of our team and that atmosphere comes with the attitude that our players have. Max Paciorettyy has been the primary contributor in Montreals recent success, which he continued with his 17th goal of the season on Tuesday.dddddddddddd. Pacioretty leads the club with 32 points and has scored in three consecutive games. Like the Canadiens, Pittsburgh (24-10-6) owns 54 points but cannot seem to escape its worst stretch of the season. Following the Penguins loss to Montreal, they fell at home to Boston 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday for their sixth loss in eight games. An inability to find the net has been the main issue. Pittsburgh has scored four goals over its last four losses and has only one power-play goal in the last seven games despite 19 chances. Sidney Crosby tallied four assists in Pittsburghs sole convincing win in the last eight games - a 6-3 victory against Tampa Bay on Jan. 2 - but he has just one goal since Dec. 22. Sids not going to score all the time coach Mike Johnston told the Penguins official website. We do have to get more secondary scoring, for sure, throughout our lineup, and not to put it all on Sid and his responsibility to score, but our power play has to respond. ... We have to get goals like we were. At the beginning of the year, those goals, they separated from being a tie game to a win. Marc-Andre Fleury took the loss against the Canadiens last Saturday, but stopped all 27 shots he saw Nov. 18 in Montreal as the Penguins won 4-0. Price is 2-2-2 with a 3.92 GAA in his last six home starts against Pittsburgh. ' ' '
